National Proficiency Award Winners and Finalists from Ohio

Agricultural Processing - Kurt Ellis, Ridgewood – National Winner
For three generations, Kurt Ellis’s family has been making cheese. Kurt is involved in manufacturing, cutting and packaging a variety of cheeses. He focuses on Swiss and Colby cheese varieties and has taken on more responsibility for the Colby production line. Kurt is a member of the Ridgewood FFA Chapter and plans to major in food science and nutrition at the Ohio State University. His FFA advisor is Suzie Davis. The award is sponsored by Archer Daniels Midland Company and CHS Foundation.

Fiber and/or Oil Crop - David Carr, Miami Trace – National Winner
David Carr started his SAE renting eleven acres from his father to raise soybeans. He expanded his operation and now rents one hundred seventy-six acres from a neighbor. David has increased his production to forty-seven bushels per acre. He is a member of the Miami Trace FFA Chapter in Ohio. David plans to pursue a degree in agribusiness and expand his farming operation. David’s FFA advisors are Tracy Dendinger and Bruce Bennett. The award is sponsored by Helena Chemical Company and Syngenta Seeds, Inc.
