Let me preface this by acknowledging that I did, in fact, root for Taylor Hicks when he was on American Idol. That being said, the following is no great shock:
Taylor Hicks might have won "American Idol," but he doesn't have his record deal anymore.
The soul singer, who won the televised singing competition in 2006, has apparently been dropped by J Records, a label within Sony-BMG, which signs the show's singers.
"Taylor is going to record on his own for the next album," said J Records publicist Liz Morentin, who did not give further details regarding Hicks.
Hick's debut album, while bowing at #2 on the charts, failed to sell 1 million copies, nor to generate a single hit song, unlike almost all his predecessors. That being said, more Idols than just Taylor fall into the disappointment column. Ruben Studdard of Season 2 was also dropped from the J Records label, and Fantasia has (thankfully) dropped off the face of the earth... oh if only she had disappeared sometime prior to her Idol run...
With the exception of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, the Idol winner has actually done relatively poorly. Idol non-winners like Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry, and even Elliot Yamin have gone on to strong post-idol careers far beyond their contemporaries from the season. Interesting how differently America votes with their Idol calls versus how they vote with their pocketbooks at the record store...
