Mom has been a school bus driver in Wilmington since before I was born; while others may see driving kids to school as a thankless and challenging occupation, Mother has always been passionate about the school, and particularly about the kids she ferries safely to and from each day. I've witnessed the relationships she's built with students and families over the decades, and it never ceases to amaze me - I'm very proud of Mom and what she does, but perhaps never more so than at Christmas.
For years, Mom and her crew have taken the occasion of the holidays to help kids who don't have the best family life. I remember more than one Christmas helping Mom pack gifts to a family that might not have enjoyed Christmas at all if it weren't for Mom and her fellow bus drivers. This year, as Mom took the reins (or wheel, more literally) as Transportation Supervisor for the District, she and her teammates decided they could do even more, using their own time, talents, and resources to gather presents and spread Christmas cheer. This is a school bus they decorated for the local Christmas parade: along with being the best parade float I've ever seen, the drivers loaded the bus with REAL Christmas presents they gathered along with the local schools.
Mom says 57 kids who wouldn't have had Christmas will know the joy of the season this year thanks to the bus drivers in Wilmington. And she's too humble to admit it, but those kids will know the Spirit of love, compassion, and generosity because of my Mom. Way to go Mom: I love you, and couldn't be prouder.
